Making Money From Scrap Cars And Trucks

Many people make money from recycling scrap, and you may have considered joining the growing industry and getting cash for junk cars from a scrapyard. There is a lot of money to be made in the industry, but knowing what to do and putting in the work are critical parts of this business model.

Getting The Cars

Before you can make cash for junk cars at the recycler, you need to find some cars to buy. Often people will sell junk cars inexpensively to get the car out of the yard. You will need a truck, trailer, and more than likely a winch to get the car onto the trailer.

If you can find some cars that the owner will give to you for free simply for hauling it off, that is the best way to start, but eventually, you will need to start paying cash for junk cars to get them and then resell the material to recover the money spent and make a profit. You will also need a place to work to strip the car and prepare it for recycling.

Stripping The Cars

Once you get a junk car, you will need to remove anything that is not recyclable. Most scrap yards that will pay cash for junk cars can give you a list of what needs to be removed from the vehicle for them to accept it.

There are some general items to deal with, like removing the tires, battery, coolant, oil, and fuel from the vehicle first. Some recyclers will allow you to leave some interior parts in place, but check with your buyer because some want all the interior plastic and fabrics out of the car.

Keep in mind, the parts you are pulling off the car may be in good shape and have some resale value. Take your time and look over the parts before you rip them out. A seat out of the car you are stripping could be hard to find, and the resale value of that seat may be worth more than the rest of the vehicle.

Tires in good shape can be sold as used tires, and glass from the car can be sold if you have a place to store it until you find the right buyer.

Selling The Car

Once the car has been prepped and meets the buyer's requirements, you can haul the vehicle to the yard. They will weigh it and give you a price for the metal. Most scrapyards pay cash for junk cars that you bring in at the rate for the day.

The price of scrap steel doesn't fluctuate much, but it can be worth checking in with the buyer before heading to the scrapyard to see what the price is that day.
